Is this to say the player determines the server's MAC address before sending a WOL magic packet? The server OS is not running, so ARP would not work-- how would the player determine the correct server MAC address dynamically?
The SB3 seems to have a (user editable) setting for the SqueezeCenter MAC address which contains the server's last known MAC address. This suggests that the player simply caches this last know MAC address and blindly sends it WOL magic packets if the server is unresponsive.
