Normalizing / Volume Control / ReplayGain

Different audio encoders and different CDs can output music that is at various perceived volumes... shockingly there is no standard for this in CD manufacturing. SlimServer (as of version 6.2.x) supports a special kind of meta-tag (see Tagging Tools) called ReplayGain.

Software that supports ReplayGain can scan your music and find the perceived volume of the tracks, then when SlimServer plays the tracks back, it will read these tags and adjust the volume accordingly. The beauty of ReplayGain is that the original song is not altered by the volume change only the outputted song is.

The following tools can help you perform volume normalization on your collection:

All OSes:

FLAC encoder

+ Freeware+ Done while encoding, one step- Track gain only, no album gain- FLAC files only

Adds ReplayGain data on encode, use the replay-gain switch.

metaFLAC

+ Freeware+ Can add ReplayGain data after FLAC files are already encoded+ Adds both track and album gain- FLAC files only

Use the add-replay-gain switch.

Windows (XP/2000):

Foobar 2000

+ Freeware and OpenSource+ Ideal for multi-album !ReplayGaining+ Adds ReplayGain tags (can be undone)+ Supports FLAC, MP3 and other formats- Beta (under heavy developement)- ReplayGain is not supported by many players (but SlimServer does support it as of 6.2.x)

Here is a Guide for applying ReplayGain using Foobar.

Mp3Gain

+ Freeware and OpenSource+ Output works in all MP3 players+ Changes can be undone- Only works on MP3 files

WavGain

+ Freeware+ Output works in all players- Only works on WAV files- Changes are permanent and can not be undone
