Squeezebox Duet Controller - Firmware Update via SD Card

Sometimes you may have problems updating the Squeezebox Controller firmware. Normally you can update the Squeezebox Controller firmware by connecting it to SqueezeCenter or SqueezeNetwork with no trouble. However, if you run into trouble you may need to manually update your current version of firmware by means of an SD Card.

Reasons for Updating the Squeezebox Duet Controller Firmware via SD Card

  • Firmware update failure on your Squeezebox Controller
  • Cannot update the Squeezebox Controller firmware from SqueezeCenter or SqueezeNetwork (even when in bridge mode)

Important Note

You must have an SD card and Card Reader to try this procedure

Steps for Updating the Squeezebox Duet Controller Firmware via SD Card

First, please check the firmware currently on your Squeezebox Controller:

  1. Hold down the left arrow key on your Squeezebox Controller
  2. Go into the “Settings” menu
  3. Go into the “Advanced” menu
  4. Go into the “About” menu

If your firmware IS one of the following Please Click Here

  • r1425
  • r2063
  • r2097

To manually update the firmware in your Squeezebox Controller, please try the following:

  1. Go to http://update.slimdevices.com/update/firmware/7.3/ and download the jive_7.3_r6038.bin file.
  2. Copy this file to your SD card
  3. Remove the battery cover and battery from the Squeezebox Controller
  4. Place the SD card in the slot behind the battery
  5. Replace the battery and battery cover on the Squeezebox Controller
  6. Turn on the Squeezebox Controller
  7. Go into the "Settings" (if you see the choose language, screen hold down the “Left Arrow” until you get to the home page, and choose “Settings”)
  8. Go into the "Advanced" menu
  9. Go to "Software Updates"
  10. Choose to update your firmware via SD card and select “continue”

Once the Squeezebox Controller is updated, at your leisure, please remove the SD card from your Squeezebox Controller.

Special Note

If at any time during this process your Squeezebox Controller asks you to "Hold the brightness button down to begin update" please try the following:

  1. Hold down the "Left Arrow" until you get to the Home page
  2. Go into the "Settings"
  3. Go into the "Advanced" menu
  4. Go to "Software Updates"
  5. Choose to update your firmware via SD card


If there is no action at all (i.e. on the remote: no update possibility or SD-card looks empty) check if the extension of the downloaded file ends with .bin. Sometimes the file is downloaded as a zip-file instead of bin.
